Default need help!!!

Ok, here’s the story and I’ll try to make it short. I’ve been hearing a popping sound it idle and low rpm coming from my exhaust for a while now. I figured, with 45,000mi on the OD, it’s time for a tune up. Well, pugs, wires, filters, and PCV valve later, the problem is still there. 2 weeks ago, my SES light came on, so I took it to a garage to check it out and clear the code. #1 cylinder misfire was the code and we could hear what we though was my ignition coil arcing in tune with the popping in the exhaust. The diagnostics was $50 to get it done and code cleared, I ordered 2 Accel ignition coils from Summit for $78, put them on today, reset the computer by disconnecting the neg battery terminal, drove for about 20mi and the SES light came on. Any ideas from anyone on what the heck could be wrong? Plugs and wires have been changed 2x now with 2 different sets of wires. Also, I’ve noticed my idle is around 12k rpm when it used to be around 8k, but I don’t know how that would tie in to #1 cylinder misfire. Any ideas from anyone?

Have you had a look at the module that goes underneath the coils? That's probably a long shot, but it's worth trying.

Idles @ 12K? My tach doesnt even go that high. lol Sorry, couldnt resist.

Also, make sure you are looking @ the idle when the engine is at the same temp. When it is cold, it idles at about 1200, and when it warms up it drops to around 800

haha, sorry about the 8k & 12k. I dont know what i was thinking last night. I know i was pretty frustrated after working 14 hrs, then putting these ignition coils on thinking that would solve the problem and then got all ticked off when it didnt...

Actually mine is idling at 1200 warm and close to 2k cold, so i don't know what's up with that. It used to idle at 1200 cold and 800 warm til all this stuff started happening. I'm thinking the computer is feeding it extra fuel to help whatever the problem is cause I've lost about 6 mpg.

Is there a way i can test my ignition module to see if that is the problem? I'm sorta getting sick of guessing what the problem is from the diagnostics readout and changing parts that might actually be ok. It's sorta getting expensive.

But while I'm thinking about spending all this money (cause I can dream every once in a while), about what cost would a built up and assembled DOHC turbo ready to drop in and go be? I can dream, can't I?

There is a very good chance that the intake manifold gasket is the cause of your problem. what can happen is that the gasket displaces at the # 1 cylinder and creates a vacuum leak that can give a misfire code on #1. With the engine running (and no open spark sources nearby) spray some brake clean or carb cleaner at the gasket area at #1 cylinder to see if there is a change in how the engine runs. If it changes then you most likey have a problem there.

Well the Accel coils do sometimes cause SES lights.....but not high idle. A vacuum leak definately sounds right, cuz that the only think that could cause both a high idle and a misfire code.
