Default New car problems

My friend has a problem on his '97 Auto SC2

When he runs the car w/ the A/C on and comes to a stop, the car dies out. Happens every time; there is no SES light or any known problems, he just bought this car yesterday and i'm assuming it has had problems b4. Also the car starts right up after it ''dies'' at stops. What could be wrong?

Will it idle normally with the AC on? Just dies coming to a stop yes? Try cleaning out the idle air control passage in the throttle body with an air intake cleaner.

Sounds like it's idling to low in Drive with the AC on. The AC only adds more drag on the motor, bu the motor should compensate by rasing the idle a little bit. Could be a sensor giving a bad input. Check all the normal tune up things first, then make sure nothing is disconnected like the PCV hose or vacuum lines (2) in the rear of the engine. Check that you have the all brass coolant temperature sensor in the rear of the head by where the trans bolts up. I'm suspecting a sensor somewhere. If you don't find something obvious, maybe consider taking it to the dealer and paying the 1 hour diagnostic fee. Also, read the article called "Is your saturn burning more oil than it should?" in the HOW TO section. You didn't say if this 97 is a high miles engine or not.

Scicarman,
Can you describe where the idle air control passage is?

Yes, the car idles as if the the A/C wasn't even on, could you give me a hint on where the IACP is? the throttle body right?

The motor runs strong and it is fast, one of the fast automatics i've driven. I'll check the sensors and have him do a tuneup, i dunno if it would be a vacuum line but i'll try, i don't think its the PCV hose that came off. Could i take of the sensors and use a dremel to clean them up? I"ll read that Brad and i don't remember the mileage.

Idling normally with the AC on basicly rules out an AC mechanical problem.

97 the IAC passage is in the throttle body. It begins at the hole in the throttle body before the throttle plate winds around pass the IAC in then out behind the throttle plate. A good cleaning using an air intake cleaner will clean any gunk out that may be slowing the IAC from controlling the idle. Spray down the passage with the engine off and on. When on you will need to control the engine RPM manually to keep it running. Also get in there with an old tooth brush and clean the throttle body with the spray and brush.
