Default Oily Plugs

I decided to replace my plugs and wires today, when removing the plugs i found they were DRENCHED in oil. My Sl2 does consume alot of oil, but i was under the impression that it was BURNING it, not leaking it directly into the cylinder........ would this be the valve cover gasket at fault?

You've all helped my saturn come a long way, thanks in advance.

if the oil was outside the combustion chamber, then it's probably the valve cover gasket.

haven't taken one off yet, but I've heard enough people tell how to do it to remember this: don't bother buying a gasket, just use RTV sealant. The OEM gasket is just pre-formed RTV anyway...

As always the year of the car is nice to have.

If you have the silver valve cover then my personal reccomendation would be to use the preformed Saturn VC gasket. If the b;lack VC then use the black "rubber" VC gasket. In both cases a dab of RTV at the timng cover to head joints is very neccesary. The black VC does not get any other RTV. The silver one gets a layer of RTV in the groove of the VC, no higher then the groove, to lay the gasket in.

Remember the you need to clean all of the oil and such from the gasket sealing surfaces, clean enough to eat from. Brake clean is you friend.

You shouldnt have to take the EGR off, I got VC off without removing it

as tommy enlightened you ill just add hes correct, the early years, 9-95 with the silver valve covers used pre formed ultra gray rtv, so yes, thats all you need, and no, no years do you need to remove the egr.
on the black valve cover twn cams never EVER just use rtv, youll have a mess on your hands and it wont seal worth donky doo. at the shop on later models with the black valve cover we use the saturn gasket and the 4 pack o ring that goes over the sprak plug holes and a light coat of rtv on both the inside and outside of the gasket , let it set and make sure all surfaces are SPOTLESS, ANY oil or debris will compromise your seal.
