Default Outer CV Joint Boot Torn

While getting oil changed at Saturn they told me my right outer cv joint boot was torn and throwing grease out and showed me.

My question is they quoted me $320 for part and installation.

Isn't this a bit steep of a price considering it's the OUTER boot???

Thanks

This is for a 2005 Saturn ION

Yeah, that's rape.

You can drive it for awhile with it torn. Both of mine are torn.

Go to Autozone, get a new axle....might be like, $100, but there's probably a $40 or $50 core charge too. Then, either swap it yourself or have a shop do it, shouldn't be too bad.

I got two junkyard axles for $10 cause both of mine were torn.

All depends if they are saying to replace the outer boot or the outer boot and joint.
saturnparts.net has the outer joints at 185$ and the boot at 42$. Now factor in about 1.5-2.0 hours labour and you are at about the amount that they quoted you.

As for used axles you may have a difficult time finding something for the 2005 ION at a good price.

Thanks....But why would the joint need replacing if just the boot is torn?

I'm thinking there would have to be something broken physically to have to replace joint, and all they showed me was torn boot so I assume their trying to pull one over?

when the boot is torn, the grease inside of that joint will leak out, especially if your driving the car, it happened on mine, and i just had some shaking at higher speeds, i still think one is messed up but i have not had the chance to fix it just yet. All in all, the shop is going to do whats best for them, and you the customer. The reason they want you to have the joint replaced is the chance there is some debris in there. Which would cause premature failure.

Generally you have a mater of hours to repair a CV boot once it is open before CV joint damage begins to occur. If t is just a small hole where the grease is still squirting out with nothing going in then the joint should be ok. If it is open enough that stuff can get in the joint is on its death bed.
