Default Over heating and strained performance

It is a 1991 Saturn SC with the 1.9l DOHC 5spd tranny. It is currently at 231,000 miles and i have only owned it for a year and three months. My current problem is that as I was driving the car slowly heated to 3/4 on the temp gauge and starting acting strained on the starting out in first gear and idling in the 1500 to 2000 rpm range.

When i parked the car to let it cool and check the fluids, it appeared to be low on oil and a little low on coolant. But when I went to start the car it wouldn't start. It tried to turn over but wouldn't just start. Had it jump started and drove it home. Only this time it was heating up slowly and driving like it was loaded down a little, but no idling at 1500 to 2000 rpm just regular 850ish. When it was parked at my home I went to start it an hour later and it still won't start on its own. Please help!!!! I'll be checking in every hour!!! ANd the cooling fan is on a manual switch. Thought that might be asked.

Check the alternator, serpentine belt and battery. I would lean to the alternator not charging.

if you were able to jump the car then its an electrical problem not an overheating problem. Your battery isn't holding enough charge, I would not say it is the alternator because if that were the case you wouldnt be able to keep the car running at all. As far as the temp these cars run hot typically, if youd like it wouldnt hurt to replace the temp sensor and flush the coolant system, especially if it hasn't been done in a long time.
