| Pardon my exhaust I realise that right now I don't even have a windshield in my car, but something has been bugging me about the exhaust.
I've noticed for some time that the exhaust always smelled a little too much, but now it's starting to stink enough that people have complained about it. Hmm.
According to Saturn, the catalytic converter was replaced a little over a year ago. So, I don't see how it could be failing. Anybody want to give me some ideas? A funky oxygen sensor perhaps? |

| What does it smell like? Rotten egg or just exhaust? |

| Well, it has a faint hint of that rotten egg smell, but it's mostly just exhaust with a strong gasoline odor. |

| How old are your plugs/wires/coils? Is the performance sucking or is it just the smell? There's lots of emissions control systems that could be dead and I don't know jack about them.....so that's my 2 cents.

| Practically everything is new. The only components that don't have less than 3,000 miles on them are the O2 sensor, throttle position sensor, egr components, and the knock sensor, and the coil packs. The coil packs tested out good according to the Haynes manual, and so does everything else for that matter. I don't believe that performance is suffering noticably, but the gas mileage is a little weak and I know that it runs rich because the plugs tell me so and I can smell gas at the tailpipe.
The only thing that I have noticed is a bit of a jitter in the throttle while cruising which has been getting progressively worse and an occasional SES light that comes on while driving and goes off after a minute or two. The only code I get after that SES light is a code 32. I don;t believe that it's related to the exhaust odor, though. |

| If you can smell gas at the tailpipe, that means your probably running rich (too much gas) The trouble code 32 (EGR system fault) is probably indicating the source of your problems.
Check out the EGR, the EGR solenoid, and maybe have a look at your MAP sensor too. Map sensors are extremely cheap, and reliable, so yours is probably okay, but if it's not, pick one up at a wrecker.
The EGR is a little less reliable, so check it out.
BTW: little known fact about Saturn EGR valves is that they're a fairly generic GM piece, so go digging around the wreckers for one.

| Well.... I do know that it;s running too rich. The plugs told me so. Map sensor is brand new. EGR sure isn't, but I have checked it out and tested it. It's all within spec. See how weird my car is?
I've been gicing thought to just replacing the dumb EGR solenoid. Maybe it's whack and the car just doesn't know it. |
