Default In Park, won't come out....

My wifes car, '98 SL2, 84k. First thing in the morning, she goes out to start the car, always starts fine, but, will not move out of park unless she moves it around for awhile. Pushes it, pulls it, has her foot on the brake etc. When it finally goes into gear, it will be fine all day! No matter how long it is parked, will be fine until the next morning! Parked it uphill, downhill, level and still is a problem...HELP! Thanks.

check the steering wheel. when you turn off a car then turn the wheel it locks, sometimes you have to turn the wheel slightly to relieve pressure from the lock to pull the car out of park.

i know this is the case for sure with the ignition...

i once heard saturns have a safety lock, especially when on grades like hills, and that it's connected to a fuse on the block, do u have a haynes or chilton's manual?

I know that there is a small solenoid under the shifter housing, that disengeges the "shift lock" when the brake is applied . You might want to check and see if it is moving "engaging and disengaging" when you put on the brake . Also it will be a little ruff to get it out of gear if it is on a hill or a slant.

Welcome to the Board.

Remove the center console and see if the brake interlock shift solenoid is moving the lock out when the brake pedal is pushed down. If may be getting sticky or gummed up especially if it is just once in the morning.
