Default Power steering pump question

Hi my 95 SC2 has developed a weird little problem the last couple of days, on Sunday when I first drove it, i took a left it sounded like a tire was rubbing, I even felt vibration in the steering wheel. The noise only happend on lefts, I pulled into a parking lot and checked everything and nothing looked bad. Monday morning when I started it up I had a real loud grinding / vibration, after a few miles it went away, I checked the power steering fluid and it was low, I topped it off and that seemed to help. This morning the noise has returned and slowly goes away as it warms up, but now it always happens on left turns. I'm pretty sure it's the pump. How difficult are these to change? Any ideas / tips here?
Thanks,
Mick

Can't imagine they would be too fun to change with the engine in the car. Anyone know if it's easier to jack the engine up? From what I can remember the pump was in a pretty tight spot on the 92 SC2 I pulled apart. Could be wrong though.

I'd recomend finding the source of the leak first. Power steering sytems can leak from the rack or the hoses, and air can get into the hydraulic system, leading to limited assistance and noise. The problem may go away as the car warms up because the fluid expands, and fills the space where air leaked in.

Are you sure its the power steering? Hows your upper motor mount look? That makes a variety of funny noises when it goes.

It would be wise to check the motor mounts, however, keep in mind the OP said

pre 97 pumps were VERY common to fail, allthough it is wise to checks for leaks, the pumps were notorious in the early gens to fail, usally the shaft will fail, they are very easy on all s series to replace, there is a couple of hidden ten mm bolts but you spin the pulley and insert a deep socket with a small extension to acccess, the other bolts are failry straightforward, whatever part you do find is needed let me know, i have every year saturn parts in stock for every s series made from 91-+ and the good news is MOST all parts fit from later models, for instance if the pump is indeed bad, we would never send you a early one that we know is prone to failure, a 2000 pump would literally bolt right on, either way check for leaks, let us know what you find, another thing to check may be your splash sheilds, when they get out of whack it may rub in turns, joey from 6th planet auto
