You'll have a large cable running direct from the neg post to the block to ensure that the starter can get the high amperage it needs while cranking. You'll also find a smaller cable from the neg post that grounds out the chassis to provide a return path for lights, gauges, PCM, etc.....
Years ago, cars used to just have the neg cable bolted to the block and then you'd have a small (usually flat braided) line going from the back of the block to the firewall. If this was inadvertenly removed, then all kinds of intermittant elec problems would arise so the manufacturers have since provided the dedicated neg post to chassis connection (plus....you gotts make sure you have enough juice going to the cockpit to power those 900 watt sub woofers)
