| Random long crank times Today is the 3rd time that the engine has (out of nowhere) had to crank for over 5 seconds to start. Its done it 1 time on a cold start and 2 times on hot/warm starts. Any ideas (not guesses)?

I pulled the #3,4 plugs 2 days after I put in my new coils to check up on them (its been a few months) and they were dark greyish green and blistered, I'm thinking that hotter is not better and would love to know why SPS recommends them.
I'm also afraid to switch back to my Densos because the #1 hole is cross threaded and I don't dare take the plugs out.
Anyone know how much it cost to have it helicoiled?

| I do believe it was the 97's (same year as mine and I have this issue) that the fuel pumps have a weird thing that they bleed off the pressure in the lines the longer they sit. so after the car sits a while it takes a little longer to start. you can test this by turning the key on for a few secs before actually cranking it, then crank it. if it starts right up, then this is the issue. |

| I have the same thought as "Robert-SL2".
Try switching the ignition to "run" (without cranking) then back to "off" say five times in a row just to get the fuel pump going a few times to see if that helps.
Do let us know what you find out.
Later,
Frank

| Yeh, my car has this issue, also a 97 coupe. I just turn the key to the start position but I don't let it crank. If you listen closley, you can hear the pump kick in and the relay kick off. Once it kicks off you should be good to go. Works for me anyway. |

| I would give it a try except for the fact that it does it randomly and not often. If it was a fuel pump problem I would think it would do it every time.... Wasn't there a recall for that problem?
I'm changing back to the densos anyway, cuz the NGKs just aren't looking very good.

| Seriously dude, try what was suggested above. I have the same problem and turning the key and not cranking before a start, especially a warm start after sitting for 30 minutes it helps.

Nate | Re-read my post, fredrick. The car has done this 3 times in 40+ starts. How would I know if the suggested trick worked if I don't know if the car wouldn't have done it anyway?
PLEASE PEOPLE, READ ALL OF THE POST AND UNDERSTAND IT TOTALLY BEFORE REPLYING!!!
