| Rediator fan testing I have a 92 SL2 DOHC auto with 195k miles on it. Just the other day, in traffic the overtemp light came on and the temp guage went into the red. I openned all the windows, cranked on the heat and the temp went down some. As long as I was moving with the A/C off and heat on the temp stay about 1/2 to 2/3 of the guage. This makes me think the radiator fan is not turning on.
I believe that it could either be the temp sensor or the fan itself. I unplugged the connector right on the fan and tried to measure for an open or a short in the fan motor but got inconsistent readings. So I jumpered 12 volts to it but the fan didn't even twitch.
Is this a valid test of the fan? Any other ways to test it?
Any other thought the overheating?
Thanks! |

| You can test the ECT sensor by putting it in boiling water and measuring it with an ohm meter. Since the water will be about 212-F, you should see in the range of 200ohms. Now meausre it in ice water. It should measure closer to 100,000 ohms. If it doesn't behave like this, it needs to be replaced.
Also, while the water is boiling, toss in your thermostat to make sure that it opens up when heated. |

| If you put 12 volts to the fan wiring and it didn't even twitch, then I'd say your fan is the problem.

| YUP if you fed 12 POS and NEG to directly to the fan's connector with nary a twitch, ye olde' fan motor es kaput.

| The good thing is that it's not hard to fix. The fan's only held on with the four bolts, and getting the motor out of the housing is fairly cut n' dry stuff.

| Junkyard. Joey at 6thplanet would be first choice.
Looks like all Saturns used the same fan motor up to at least 1996. (ACDelco interchange info)
