Default Should I paint my cam cover?

I was wondering if it would be worth it to paint my cam cover. Tomorrow I have to take it off anyways to replace my valve cover gasket and while I have it off I was thinking about painting it.

Next question, what steps would I go thru to paint it?

I personally think it would look good. Not quite sure what paint you should use though....

I am pretty sure I would need to use the high engine heat the sell at most all automotive stores. Main question I have is how would I prep the surface before painting it.

definatly degrease it and scrub it good.

i would also recomend using a light sandpaper to give the paint something to stick to.

then remember to use light coats rather than one thick one.

bake it when finished in the oven.

i recently saw some high temp engine paint that simulated the look of anodized aluminum.

i'm gonna be getting that when i paint my camcover.

Well the cam cover doesn't get all that hot...but better to be safe than sorry I guess.

For prep this is what I would do: Go over the whole thing with sand paper, rinse off all the dust, then wet a rag with alcohol/paint thinner and wipe the whole thing down.

Whatever paint you get see if they also have a clear color, that way you can spray like 2 coats of clear on to protect it better.

When I've done them in the past, I cleaned them with brake cleaner first. Then, I used a rotary tool to clean off the baked on crap. Then, lightly sand, and clean again. I'd recommend using a hi-temp primer too. You can find stuff at PepBoys that dries in 30 minutes. And, I agree -- bake it in the oven for a while once you get the final coat on. It will help prevent it from peeling.

Okay then, Ill try it out then. For the valve cover gasket, my friend whom works at a shop said that saturns only use silicon and no gasket. Is this right?

only the ones with the aluminum covers.
