Default sl2 acting weird

hey i need some help i have a 97 sl2 and it has a problem starting after a long drive at first i thought it was the altenater but now i think it is the starter solinoid. when you let it sit still for a little bit it starts up just fine, i have checked the points on the distributor coil and the spark plugs are brand new everything else is fine. anybody else know of anything else i might be missing

Define problem starting a bit better please.

Is the engine turning over (cranking)? If it is cranking over is there any spark?
If not cranking over do the lights dim when you try to crank it? Any noises when trying to crank over and it does not?
