Default Steering Wheel Shake

When I hit 60+mph my steering wheel starts to shake. I have already had the wheels/tires re-balanced. Could this be warped rotors or bad alignment?

Alignment is a definate possibility. I had a Taurus that did that, and it was because the frame was bent.

The puzzling thing is that it only does it when I have my rims on. When the stock wheels/tires are on there is no problem.

Hmm. Are you 100% sure the wheels/tires are balanced properly? I'd say they're not if it ONLY happens with those on.

If you have a problem with only a certain set of rims then the problem is there and not the car. Are the rims mounting properly onto the car?

Proper bolt pattern, right size center hole, mounted flat and flush to the car--no crud between the rim and the hub of the car. As said before if the problem only happens with these rims then the problem is there. Are the tires ok? No flat spots, out of round, or seperated belts? The tires and rims will balance ok if those things are there but the car will still have a vibration.

Hi,

I hope I can help.

You are only experiencing problems with aftermerket wheels and not the O.E wheels that came on the car originally?

The most common problem is that the wheel or the tyre, could be out of round. The type of vibration that you would experience is not the same as when the wheels are not balanced, as it will come and go and we describe it as resonance. Balancing and the vibration is always there.

The second problem is that the wheels could be fitted with a different and incorrect bolt or nut where it fastens to the hubs.

The last problem is a bit more technical. Where the wheel locates on the hub, it is supposed to be drilled to a diameter specific for your car. When wheels are made, they are drilled bigger in the centers, in order to fit a variety of cars. A loose ring, called a spigot ring, with your automobiles spigot diameter, is then fitted in the wheel to form a tight fit onto the hub. You can easily check for this by lifting the auto onto the jack and loosening your nuts or bolts on one of the front wheels. The wheel would want to drop down, which is an indication that the spigot rings are missing. Go to the closts centre where they sell the specific brand of wheel you fitted, and you can tell them you need spigot rings fitted to the wheels. They are not that expensive

Thanks

When my friend was balancing them he showed me that one of the tires was warn down a little on the inside due to negative camber. Would this be causing the vibration?
