Well, to tow a trailer you'll need to get a hitch set up on there. I purchased and installed one on my 2001 SL, and they're not too hard to install yourself, which saves some money. (You just gotta have the guts to drill a few rather large holes in your trunk pan.) if I remember right, the hitchs all ran around 160 - 230 bucks new. I see them on Ebay occasionally, though for far less.
All you need after that is a bar to stick in the hitch and a ball to go on the bar, figure about 30 - 40 bucks for those and a trailer wiring harness, which will probably run between 14 bucks for a universal, to 30 bucks or so for a custom fit, plug-and-go unit.
Those little flatbed utility trailers that places like Wal-Mart sell will work great for a small riding mower, and the car won't have any trouble pulling it. Just remember to get some good straps, you don't want to go dropping lawn care implements behind you as you cruise down the road. it tends to piss off other motorists when your Snapper gets stuck in their grill.
So, in essence...
Possible? Yes. Hell, I hooked a 5X7 U-Haul box trailer to my car and hauled it between Florida and North Carolina a few times without trouble.
Practical? That's really up to you to decide. Is it worth it to spend this much dough so you can move a lawnmower once a week? Can you maybe find other uses for the trailer?
Advisable? Won't harm a thing so long as you do it right. |
