Default trunk batt mount'n/wire'n?

i have a '02 SL1 that over the summer i am moveing my 13W7 and 1k JL amp into. this is my dd that has some apperance and audio upgrades.

i know i want a second batt in the trunk, they will both be Optimas, and i am prolly going to put a cap on both amps. (will also have a 4ch for the component speakers) but should i have a shop insall the 2nd batt or do it myself. I know i'm capible of it i jst don;t know what size wire to go between the batts. and should i put a fuse at both ends by each batt, if so what size?

My q's are-

who here has moved a batt to the trunk? what wire did you use? 4-awg enough or should i go with 0-awg? where is the best place to trace wire without pinching under the carpet? anyone have setup pics? does the trunk mount box need to be vented to outside air? will a tube from a sealed box to outside beneath car work? what is the stock output on a S-series alt? do they made a high output one or will one from another car work?

side note, has anybody got a pro/con on caps? witch is better, why? i have a new 1 farad Rockford Fosgate, but may jst go out an get 2 new ones for the new setup.

any info or opinon is welcome.

tnks, Masta Paco

everything i have ever read has said that capacitors are mainly for show, or to keep your headlights from dimming on bass hits. I suspect that the second battery will also not really be any kind of benefit.

Why do you want the second battery? What gains do you hope to get out of it? (serious Q, not sarcasm)

I think you need a HO alt much more then a second battery or cap, that's the only way to meet a higher demand

the second battery (pref a deep-cycle one) could be beneficial if the stereo will be used with the car off.

There are high output alts, and it's an important part of a high power stereo setup.

well i am around the same wattages as you are. if you get the ho alt then you don't need a second battery . here is a link to the 200 ho alt i have http://www.excessiveamperage.com/. caps are only good for sql and does nothing for spl and all it does for sql is help it not miss hits like a snare drum or anything like that. but if you want to add a second battery then just wire it is parall you just have to be sure to use a deep cycle for both and the same class and if for them to be around the same in terms of being charged. also have you upgraded you main electrical wires yet? if not i suggest doing that.

also about you battery vent question if you look on the left side of you trunk you should see a vent there and i would just find a way to use that instead of drilling holes.

tnks for the info.

having 2batts was more so because i've never seen or heard of a high output alt for and s-series. one amp should do fine then, will still mount batt in the trunk for convience. should i put a fuse under the hood where my stock batt is b4 going to the new wire to the trunk? i will run 0-AWG jst to be shuhre there is good flow. my amps are a 1K JL Audio, and i will be getting either the 300/450 JL Audio or a simaler power kenwood 4-chan. depends on witch brand component i choose. I was going to add a cap to each one just as an extra safety for my lights that all reddy dim off of the 2 12's on a 250 amp amp that is in the car now.

does anybody have pics of their trunk mounts or under hood shots after the move?

SouthPole1989- what 'main electrical wires' do you meen? batt to alt to starter wire? hot wire to headunit? better speaker wire?

you want to fuse the wire as close to the battery as possable. and the main electrical wire i am talking about are Ground to chaiss, ground to block, and the alternator wire.

Hey I run a front RedTop Optima and a rear BatCap battery connected by 0 awg. I secured it to the underside of the car then ran it thru a set of holes in the rear driver seat and up into the trunk, not the super cleanest but works well. I also have that custom built 200 amp alt from EA and its amazing, took a little work getting the correct one, but install is a piece of cake. It does whine like a mini supercharger but keeps the volts pretty constant even under heavy beating. I love my setup other then the front stage is weak considering the two 15s in the trunk. But its clean inside the car and has the ability to violently shake the body of the car if I want to show off. But alas I think I am growing tired of this style of stereo. Hearing loss doesnt sound fun, I think my next system will be all SQ.

which 15's do you have. i was looking at 15's but most need at least 3.2 f^3 for ported.

always what did nathan do send you the wrong alt?

ok, if its been done safely under the car then ima have to look into a spot where i can have the wire come up into the trunk area. is there any special spot under the hood i should remount the grownd cable? cradle, engine/engine mount holdown bolt, firewall?

what is the stock output on a SL1 alt? 200 amps sounds like overkill, will getting to high of an alt do any damage to my stock electronics in the rest of the car?

tnks again for the info.

An alt and a battery are completely different thing, and cannot serve the same purpose unless you're turning it all off between songs to recharge the batteries

Good luck on your audio system
