Default Handling help

I just decided that I am going to be keeping my Ion for awhile, so its time to start the mods.

Power: It is adequate for now. The car is essentially weightless, so Ive managed to hold my own against supposedly better cars for straight lines.

Handling: Terrible! This is the first non-sports car Ive owned (and most of have been Euro made). I want to be able to AutoX it, I know it wont be great for it, but Id still like to see what it can do. Ive been looking for new parts and so far have only found lowering springs. Does anyone know where I could find strut bars and a sway bar for an 03 Ion 1? New tires of course are coming. What else should I be looking for? (Ive never had to upgrade anything else to get the results Ive wanted, but Ive never started out with handling that is this poor).

Transmission: Seems solid enough. The gear ratios arent the best for what I want to do with it, but that is far down the road and most likely will not be messed with while I own the car (unless I do an engine swap, which is unlikely). However, the shifter is a dissappointment. Where could I find a short throw for an Ion? Theyre everywhere for the SC, doesnt look like its compatible though. Ive seen one for the Cobalt (though I cant remember where Im sure I can find it again), would that fit? Will it require modification?

That said, the car is great of course. I need a small family sedan and it is perfect for that.

After more poking around Ive found the front strut bar, and of course more lowering springs. Still no luck on a sway bar or a rear strut bar though.

the first and best thing that you can do for handling is tires, tires, tires. nothing will come close to the leap in handling capability that good tires will bring. next should be the best suspension you can afford/or will be allowed in the class you want to be in. i believe the best class for the ion only allows for damper replacement. then you should toy with the alignment. there are plenty of ppl that should know what does and doesnt work on the ions.
