Default mysterious hole in my console since it was towed....

My '06 Ion was towed this past weekend and when I got it back, there seemed to be something missing from my console just above the row of gear symbols... (directly above the P). I never really noticed anything there before, but now that there is a hole, I'm wondering what happened to the cover. would it have popped out for some reason when my car was towed? did the towing guy have to remove it? Obviously it's not a big deal, I'm just curious.

I just went over to my parents' house and yes there is indeed a black plastic filler plug there. Don't second geuss yourself. It probably was there before and missing now, that's what you noticed. Maybe it jarred out during towing, or maybe that's where the shift interlock defeat is. If it is, the tow truck guy might have needed to get to it if he needed to get the car out of park and the battery was dead. Was the battery dead?
Unfortunately I could not find anything about a shift interlock defeat in the owner's manual. I would be very surprised if there's a car out there with no defeat. I looked in the hole and didn't see anything but a dark void.
If your car is reasonably new the dealer's parts counter might give you a new on for free, or if you have to pay I bet it's not very much.

youre right, the shift interlock override button cover is missing, the tow truck driver must have put your car in neutral if it didnt start to get it onto the truck

I thought it might be the interlock defeat, but if it is, why doesn't the owner's manual mention it, and why does it have a cover that makes it inconvenient to use and give you something to lose? I've never seen that before.

they make it inconvenient to use because they only want you to use it in an emergency so you dont put your car into gear without your foot on the brake

I couldve sworn i saw this in the manual, i remember it saying to use your key to pop it off if you needed to. The only reason i even remember is because i thought it was retarded, if you dont get it popped the first time you'll scratch the area.

what it looks like ( in my hand)

flip side, it has a notch to lock it in.

with it popped out, this is what yours looks like now

... just because there were no pix of it.

If that were so then all the defeats on all the cars since they started putting in interlocks would be made inconvenient to use.

Let me change my statement from "It's not in the manual." to "I can't find it in the manual."
