Default Oil Life Monitor

Alright, I've reset this thing before. I've changed the oil every 3K miles using Mobil 1, 5-30 and a new Fram filter. I have 27K on this car. Now, the 'change oil' message keeps coming on. I can't get it to reset.

Anyone else have this problem?

The oil is clean, pressure is good, the oil looks good when changed, the temp is good, economy good, sounds good, runs really well. Just can't figure it out.

Any accurate feedback would be good. Any experiences anyone has had with this, before I go to the dealership with it.

Default Re: Oil Life Monitor

This is straight from the owners manual.

How to Reset the Oil Life System
The GM Oil Life System calculates when to change your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Anytime your oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. If a situation occurs where you change your oil prior to the CHG OIL message being turned on, reset the system.

After changing the engine oil, reset the system by doing the following:

Press and release the trip/reset button until the OIL LIFE message is displayed.
Then press and hold the trip/reset button until a chime sounds five times, and RESET is displayed in the message center. When the system is reset, the odometer will again be displayed in the message center.
Turn the key to LOCK.
If the CHG OIL message comes back on when you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure.

The change oil message is a calculated thing. When the calculated conditions are met then the light is turned on. It is reset by the above method. I have never had an ION that would not reset by the above method.

Found the problem.

As I have stated, "I've done this before." I did it straight from the owners manual.

I didn't actually find a problem, but the salesman that sold me the Ion headed me away from the repair counter and told me of a 'glitch' that rarely, but still can happen. I pulled the power off of the battery for a few minutes, reconnected it, and it cleared.

The salesman guarenteed me, this would permanently solve the problem.

He used to be in the service department, and said he's seen it happen to few 2003-2004 Ions and has no idea why it happens.

It only happens apparently in the first 25K miles, if it happens at all, and remains until power has been dropped and reconnected.

I theorize that it may just be a glitch in the computer programming code that rears its' head when all conditions are just right and causes a calculation error. Similar to some of the Schlumberger PLCs I've worked on in the past, and their subroutine idiosynchrocies.

None the less, a simple and no where near a critical problem.

Thanks for the feedback, though!

By the way, what suggestions do you have for a high quality filter?

And, what filters might you suggest.

It appears that not all manufacturers make this particular filter yet, and the top of the line FRAMs are available through my place of business for $2.00 each.

If I can get maximum flow, particulate removal, and element strength/integrity from another brand; then I'm willing to step up to it. I like to drive a little harder anyway.

Here!

If you search around the site, there is some interesting reading, but that link gets right down to it. Not really a sorce for hard info, but I quite liked it.

What doesn't make sense to me is that while AC delco is the #1 manufacturer for GM replacement parts, I can't find the correct Ecotec AC Delco filter in any Advance Auto or Autozone! They sell plenty of AC delco filters for other GM engines, but not this one! I don't understand.

Anyway, I have supertech and purolator filters.

Angry Resetting Oil Life Monitor

Straight from "Getting to Know Your 2006 ION," p.15...

Resetting Oil Life Monitor

After changing the engine oil, and/or if you get it changed at Wal-Mart and they forget it and/or don’t know how to reset it, the oil life monitoring system must be reset. Follow these steps to reset the monitor and send the bill to Saturn:

1. With the engine running or the ignition key in RUN and the engine off, press the trip odometer reset stem once or twice until the “OIL LIFE” message is displayed and flashing in the message center.

2. Press and hold the trip odometer button on the instrument panel for a few seconds until a chime sounds five times.

The OIL LIFE” message remains on without flashing when the reset procedure is complete.

If the light illuminates again and remains on for 30 seconds at the next ignition cycle, the system did not reset. Repeat the above procedure.

See section 3 of your Owner Manual.

IF THIS DOESN’T WORK POST ANOTHER REPLY and/or VOTE FOR A DIFFERENT CONGRESSMAN and/or TRADE CARS.

P.S. I HAVE BEEN SEVERELY LIMITED TO ONLY FOUR OF THE FOLLOWING:. BUT THEY'RE CUTE!
