Default 97 sl1, perf and norm button on the tranny, what does it do?

it feels like it downshifts faster, and holds the gear longer. is that what its supposed to do?

I've noticed in my sc2 that when I flip it on performance then its stays in each gear longer to get more power out of that gear but it guzzles gas quicker than "normal". I usually keep it on normal and if I'm "racing" someone then I put it on performance.
