Default Catalytic Converter Prices?

1999 Saturn SC-1

We've been having so many power-type problems, had the throttle body cleaned in the past with no big help...catalytic converter has recently been rattling pretty bad. We took it in to a non-dealer repair shop and was quoted $1100 for parts/labor for the CAT. Does that sound right - he told me that was the Saturn part and that he would check for some other prices. What have you guys paid in the past for this job on late '90's Saturns?

personally it sounds like if you go their your going to get HOSED. Is it the converter itself that is rattling or just the heat shield? But if the cat is really that bad you could just cut out the old have a new one installed and save yoruself some mad cash.

I got mine from a local shop for $150 installed.

When I bought the car, the dealer told me they wouldn't do one out of warrenty, because their cost was $600.

$150 - that's quite a difference from $1200 - they're supposed to call me back tomorrow...we'll see what they come up with.

even here in california where we have to get a very special cat cause of the hard smog laws, i can get it replaced for $400 at a local muffler shop,

the dealer is a rip on everything.............

and if you live outside california, you can do ityourself for less than $100, maybe $200 max at a muffler shop...........

that is a HUGE difference...............

They found a cheaper one for $420 (part), so at least a little better. I called the Saturn dealer and he told me $820 for the part because it came with part of the exhaust pipe. Thanks for the advice!

Advance Auto Parts sells them for $70 - I just checked online. Don't let them rip you off.

don't go to the dealer, you live in Texas, this whole thing shouldn't cost you more than $200/$250 installed.

when they replace the cat, cut weld the old one out, reweld the new in, forget about the extra pipe, you don't need it AGAIN, any decent muffler shop that handles cats can do this in less than an hour.

save yourself tons of $$$$.............

or do it yourself for less than $100...........

When its broken, upgrade!

Alot less than 1200, and a nice upgrade. Doesnt say the pipe diameter on the catback but theres plenty of high flow cats to choose from there.
