Assumption is that you mean a multimeter? More functions on it than just the ohm meter?
If you have instructions for it have a look at them to see what you need to do to run the meter. If you don't then it depends on the meter what you need to do. A self ranging meter you just put the leads to where you are measuring. A manual/non self ranging meter you need a setting that will display 5,000 to 10,000 ohms.

The coil testing for resistance:
Across the two towers where the plug wires go you want to see approx 8,000 ohms. If that is good then take one lead and put it to a good ground point on the engine (assumption being that the coil is still installed in the car) and the other still on a tower. You want to see a reading of open or infinate (depends on the meter). If you see anything less than that even somethign in the milliosn of ohms then the coil is bad.

Ok. I got a reader and it said when I put it on the two towers 1460 on one coil and 1960 on the other coil. Not sure if the reader was fine or I was doing it wrong. I took reader back and replaced the coils at AutoZone $39 each (epoxy filled). Seams to run better. Stronger. BUT, still drops that 200rpm's from 2nd to 3rd. I also think I am getting better mpg. Estiamte around town 30mpg (after coils were replaced). Better than 25mpg (before coils) as previously posted. I will post back as that's an estimate.

Automatic or manual?

Assuming Automatic:
The drop of 200rpm's is more likely the Torque Converter locking. On the S-series (unlike most cars) the TC locks in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear.

the s-series tranny is a beast on its own. Why it locks in the lower gears i dont know haha. youd have to ask GM

Glad to hear its a good tranny though. Do you know what the gear ratio is? 4:10 or 3:73?
