Default I need help! "98 SC1

For days now I crank and drive about 1 -2 miles and when sitting still, idling the car goes dead just like the ignition is turned off. Now rough running, no spitting, no skipping, nothing! It is then somewhat difficult to start but 20 to 30 seconds later it cranks and runs great the rest of the day, about 50 miles to work and 50 miles home. Anyway, left it at the mechanics for several days and he can't figure it out. Obviously, I'll find a new mechanic but thought someone out there might have an idea? I did put a new fuel filter on it and that didn't help.
