Default I need some advise on buying a SC1.

I have a neighbor that has a 1997 SC1 SOHC that has a thrown rod. Outside is in good to very good condition and the interior need a bit of attention (Headliner sagging & carpet & seats dirty). It is a power car with windows, sunroof and automatic transmission. I could buy the car for $500 or less as he needs to move it now as he is moving out of the house he is in. My question is what year motors will bolt up with no mods and where is a good source for one.

Thanks in advance for the advice as I am looking for a good gas mileage daily driver!

O yea its a 120,000 mile car.

As far as I know, any 1996-1998 motor should bolt up without much issue. If it's a 98, you'll most likely need to replace the fuel rail (Saturn used a returnless fuel line from 98 on up) and possibly the throttle body (different throttle position sensors), I know I had to swap both when putting a DOHC from a 98 in my 97 SC2.

For $500, it doesn't sound like too bad of a deal.

If I were you, I'd ditch the SOHC and swap in a DOHC right off the bat, you won't regret it. It might be a little more involved than a simple SOHC -> SOHC changeover, but trust, it'll be the best "mod" you ever treated the car to.

Well I picked it up for $400. I have a line on a motor for $500 with a 5000 mile guarantee. Any advice on this motor swap would be great. Will the front of the car come off? ie bumper and front support to expose the motor for an easy pull out to the front????

The kid slung a rod (BOTTOM OF THE ROD) right out under the exhaust. I think the crank must have broken.

The easiest way I've found to take out an engine in a Saturn... Out the bottom. Disconnect all the wires and hoses, drain the fluids, support the radiator, drop the subframe, lower the engine/transmission with jacks.
