| It Lives Again!! Well, i FINALLY got my car back from the mechanic. It only took him 3 WEEKS to get my new engine in after we payed him half up-front. But i finally took it back today. I have to take it back in on Wednesday for a fluid check, and maybe to fix my windows if he has the parts in. A few weird things though. He said since the engine was seized he had to pull the tranny too to get the engine out. Is this normal? Also, whenever the car shifts (auto tranny) it seems to rev up really high like it's not catching or something. Is this normal and I should just get used to it?
and my final question:
what is the difference between DOHC engines with the silverish cover, and the black twin-cam cover? year? anything else? |

| Aluminum(silver) was on the OBD I cars, 91-95. Composite(black) is on the OBD II cars, 96 and up. |

| and anybody know why the transmission is reluctant to shift? once it goes over 3k rpm it sounds like utter ****, gets loud, and seems to have a hard time shifting. |

i've found that it makes this sound in neutral and park. would that mean that its not the transmission after all? |

| Sounds to me like the torque converter may be bad or wasn't installed properly. |

| On my 96, I found it easier to pull both the engine and trans together(I have done it twice). I'm pulling it from the top. I know that often at the dealer they remove it from the bottom iwht the subframe and all.
You didn't mention how many miles are on your trans. It is probably not related to the work you've had done. It could be a valve body problem or the solenoids (signal) that moves the clutches. If you have high miles, maybe you just have worn clutches. One problem with the saturn tranmissions is wear of the drive pin. If it gets too bad, it can eventually eject the damaged pin through the side of the case. This isn't causing your problem, but if it's a high mile trans, seriously consider a rebuild to prevent this.

| Sounds like he put the torque converter on the flywheel and then installed the engine onto the trans. The input shaft and torque converter were not alligned. Now you have a worn down bearing in the trans or a bent input shaft, Worn down thrust bearing on the crankshaft and the torque converter is dumping metal chips into the trans. Oh and the thrust bearing that wore down is now chewed up and is inside your oil filter. Cut it open with a pair of tin snips and you will probably see metal chips there too.
Is it ticking from the rear of the oil pan?? If so, it is what I just discribed. Been there and done that. $120 will fix the engine, $65 for another torque converter and 600 minimum for another trans. Mine is trashed and I am looking for a manual. I am tired or auto's. |
