Default Not starting, and stalling while idling in Park.

Hello,

New member here, so if this is the wrong place to post, please let me know the correct place, and I will re-post - with apologies.

I have a 95 SL2 with 80K miles.
I just got an oil change, and service. After the service I noticed that when idling it goes up to 2000rpm, back to about 500rpm, and tends to stall.

I took it back, and they replaced the idle air filter. It helped for about a day, and then would not start when hot. It seems to start fine when cold. Also, the idle problem is back.

I did a search here, and did not see anything with my specific problem.

Please let me know if you have any ideas., and thanks!!

[Edit: what they replaced was the idle air control valve.]

Now that I said I searched for this here, I just saw a thread a little below this one about the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS). I wonder if that's the problem.

Any suggestions would be welcome - Thanks again.

Thats the first step. That sensor is VITAL to many systems in the car. You car has 2 of them, however the one with the 2-wire connector is the one you need to replace.

I hope they replaced your Idle Air Control valve since these car dont have an Idle Air Filter

While your under the hood, take the throttle body off and clean it. Be sure to clean all the passages ways especially those to the IAC.

if idling is still bad, tap the Throttle Position Sensor with the end of a screw driver during the high idle. if it changes then the TPS is the culprit.

Idle air filter - yeah, that was a good one.

Thanks for the response. That's very helpful.

Just an update: I replaced the ECTS, and it seems to be running fine. I'll drive it for and let you know if there are any other updates on this issue.
