Default O2 sensor, Can I...?

I want to replace my upper O2 sensor (code is lazy O2 sensor- 96 sc2). The parts store lists one with factory connector for $65 and one that does not have factory connector for $18. This is a 1 wire. Can I buy the $18 one and cut the connector off my old one and either crimp connect or solder and heat shrink it on the new one?? Are they really charging that much more just for the oem connector? If so, why don't the car companies use a universal connector? Probably so they can charge more for replacement? I know this car is old, but I need to get another 20K at least out of it to get it over 200K Mi.
Thanks, Brad_bb

Many have spliced the universal O2 in and have had no issues

Thank you. I figured I could but wanted some confirmation. I can't believe they charge $49 more just to have a factory connector. Those poor suckers who Pay the $67 for that one... It'll take me 5 minutes to swap the connector and seal up the connection.
