Default SL2 tranny acting funny

So I have a '99 SL2 auto with 256,618km on it. I've had the tranny serviced 28,756km ago. I've kept up with the servicing of the tranny before every 50k mark through the life of this car.

Sometimes when I start the car in the morning and I put it into drive the car will not go into gear. I'll then put it back into park then back to drive and it will engage. Sometimes I will be driving and it takes a second longer than it should to gear down, I hear a "clunk" sound. Last night I was driving and it seems to be getting worse, taking a few more seconds to gear down. The problem always seems to happen when gearing down, not up.

I guess my question is how much do ya figure it's going to cost to fix. I live in the Toronto area. I haven't checked the tranny fluid yet but will do so in a few minutes. Just letting it warm up.

I guess I'm lucky that this happened during my vacation and not when I'm working. I drive 82km one way to work and don't feel like renting a car.

Any help would be appreciated.

Checking fluid is certainly a good place to start. After 250K miles, the tranny may be getting tired.

For future reference, this may get more (or better) responses in the "technical" section.

Default truly truly

yeah i wouldnt sweat it really i had tranny trouble on an old saturn i bought a while back it was my first car and my uncle who is a 23 yr mechanic for GM go figure told me it could be one thing wrong and thats that ur tranny fluid level is low or getting low due to wear on the motor after 250k miles id say hes right it sounds to me like wen u start ur engine morningly ur tranny fluid is sloshing around in there frm side to side and wen u accellerate ur car tipps backward naturally so it could slide all to the end of the tranny causing gear slip and lag, simply check the level and fill it as necessary or if crap comes to toilet paper, rip the thing out and replace it from a junker car, provided u have the funds. good luck
