Default Window replacement?

Can anyone walk me through the process of replaced a driver's side power window? It was smashed on friday, and I'm looking to repair it next week. Do I remove the inside and outside panels? I'm not sure how to do anything more than that right now.

also does anyone know how to clean all of this glass out of my car/door?

Because you need to replace the glass, the bess bet would be to remove the outside panel. From there you'll have access to the glass, its retainers (which are white clip ons) and the motor. You shouldnt need to remove the motor to replace the glass.

Cleaning the broken glass out could be a real chore. The shards may well be in the weave of the fabric, or the carpet and that will make for a problem. I would suggest something more powerful than a home vacuum cleaner, so perhaps take it into a garage instead and use one of the pay vacs.

First take the window to half way open.

Remove the inside trim panel, including the armrest, levers and unplug any electical equipment (such as windows, mirrors, speakers).

Label everything that you take off...quite frequently there will be rubber washers and other bits and pieces that fly everywhere (not labelling can sometimes lead to having new window in place, door panel back on and a small pile of bits by your feet that weren't there when you started).

Clean out the glass clamp...where the window glass usually sits (this should be half way down the door and away from door strengthening framework...if it is hidden, plug the power back in and move it down to a clear area).

Use a soft brush...paintbrush is ideal...and gently brush the glass out of the door into a vacuum cleaner pipe that you have in your hand..thus brush in one hand, vac in the other.

Then get a friend to assist by gently lowering the new glass from the outside, down into the door space and onto the glass clamp...make sure that the rubber strip is not trapped or damaged. Tighten the clamp frame to hold the glass securely...BE CAREFUL!

Test the rise and fall of the new glass, make sure it goes all the way down and all the way up before you put the inner panels and bits back together.

If you are happy with it, put everything back together and then check it again for the glass catching anywhere when rising or falling.

To get rid of glass in the carpets, take the carpets out or vac them. However do not be surprised if you get pelted with glass out of your heater/aircon vents for weeks to come as you never really get all of it out successfully.

My Supra lost a window and I had glass coming at me for 6 months from the heating/aircon system despite the window not being anywhere near the vents in the first place

Sorry A.J

The oddities of the S-series has bit you in the backside. RC1488 has the correct method.

The outer door panel needs to come off. There will be a noise reduction pad that will need to be moved out of the way. Once that is done the guts of the door are there. With the broken window all you will need to do is to remove the white clips from the regulator, push the lock tab in and slide the clip out. Remove the clip from what is left of the window and save it. The new glass may or may not have them.
Now vacuum up all of the broken glass from in the door. Use a screw driver to remove all of the broken glass from window tracks--the side ones and the top one as well.
From there maneuver the new glass into the door and install it in the window regulator.
As A.J said now check the operation of the window and if good put it all back together.

You're pretty hard up on removing the bits from your seats/carpet as mentioned. Glass has a way of getting into everything and everywhere. You'd think they would do something to help make it easier to remove when a window is shattered.

I have only had to do this *lucky* one time and it was with a truck and it was a snap since it was kind of an older truck at the time (over ten years). I ended up needing to take it to a place that washes cars with the super suction hose to vac all the glass out. I could not believe it, but from only a rock being thrown at the window and busting it, there was so much glass. Good luck with the clean up.
