Excluding the hybrid models, does anyone here know which Saturn model gets the best mileage with fuel?

The hybrids are a bit out of my price range unfortunately, so I am trying to find out what the best regular line is for mileage.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

The SL1 gets 28 city and 40 hwy.
The Ion gets 24 city and 32 hwy.
These will be slightly higher with a manual transmission.
The reasons are simple, small car with a small engine.

While I will still have to do some additional research on my own, you gave me more to go on than I had before.

Of course if anyone else has some suggestions, they are more than welcome to share them as well.

Second Gen SC1 or SL models. they can get up to 42mpg. my first saturn was 96SL.. I missed that car.

Unless i'm mistaken though, wasn't the SC1 model discontinued in 2002?

I have absolutely nothing against buying cars used however, so this should still be fine if I can get a good enough price.

If you are looking for new only, I suggest the Aura XE 3.5L V6, which gets over 30mpg on the highway. 2008 will be the last year for this engine option. OR - You can pick up a slightly used 2007 ION (which is the best year IMHO) for under $15. if you look around. I have a '07 ION 3 manual and am getting an average of 33mpg and higher.

Sl1, sc1, or Sw1 is the best bet. Yes it was discontinued in 2002, however this is an easy car to work on, reliable, and doesnt have to be brought to a dealer to get it fixed. I got 2 s_1's both achieving around 38mpg with veryyy aggressive driving. My '02 got 42mpg with the a/c on, doing 70 - 75mph down to Florida on '95. (the '02 has 178k miles on it also, a teenager in the s-series world ).

Any s-series matched with a good set of tires is a great economy car. My sl2 DOHC gets 34 on the highway.

I have gotten all my s-series cars under 4K. Can you buy a new car at the dealer at that price??? Even adding on any maintenance bills i still wont even reach a dealer price for the aura, ion, or any other saturn haha

I have got 35 mpg hwy with my 07 ion 2.2L auto. I have heard of people getting 38 with the 5 speed. I have also noticed that I get better economy with premium fuel, instead of el cheapo 87. But I live in NY and have heard we get lower quality fuel.

My cubemate here at work has a 2001 SL, 5 speed stick, average MPG 34.5(city/urban), best MPG 39.98(mostly highway).

I drive a 96 SC2, auto, and I get average MPG 27 (city/urban) and a best MPG of 29.
I don't consider myself a hypermiler, but I keep it to about 65 tops on the highway and try not to let my shifts go over 3000 rpm.
