^^^lol yeah, they're the main reason we go to emissions every year (along with O2 sensors, but the two work together anyway). The catalytic converter converts the poisonous exhaust gases into gases less poisonous. Emissions checks to make sure that you're not putting out too many poisonous gases. As a whole, saturns are particularly good at not spewing too much of the poisonous stuff.

well which L series car is your friend getting? cuz the 6-cylinder gets 182 hp at the crank. In all honesty you can't put your finger on a "rough estimate" that you'll get from all of those mods, but rather it will end up being a percentage of your stock horsepower added on. As to that percentage, there's no real way of knowing until you try.

so why is your friend going all the way to porting/polishing his exhaust ports when he's not even considering intake/exhaust? Those are the two most basic mods that people do. Also motor mounts won't help him much in regards to hp, but will free him some definite gains in torque.

There aren't any smog tests in Nevada except in the two major counties...Washoe and Clark

Default HP Rating

Yo Rival,

The exact answer to your question is for your homeboy to go and have the car dyno'd at your local speed shop. But just a rough estimate is no more than a 15 to 20 hp gain IF everything is true. But I find it rather strange to have the exhaust ports ported & polished and not the intake. The intake is the most important. He should at least have a short ram, or cold air intake to add a few more horses. If he still has the same stock pistons and cam, his HP gain really isn't much. Now if he was "blown" or "turbocharged" now that's a different chapter.

Peace

Yup. To get the "exhaust ports" polished, requires taking off the head....why wouldn't they do the whole head (intake too)? I would also call bull on the cam gears. If he's got cam gears for making power he must have taken it to the dyno to get it tuned. If its for real ask him for the dyno chart. Cam gears and no dyno tunig = uselessness.

Assuming everything is true, I'm guessing about a 5whp gain at the most. Exhaust mods without intake mods are hugely pointless. Why wouldn't he have something like a short ram at the least? Getting air out doesn't do any good if you can't get more in.....

Side note: I'm betting its an SLx liek resistor said

Another side note: No power steering is not fun if he plans on running rims with wider tires.....or even on stock tire for that matter...
