Default Painting Information

Good Day

Just got my 95 SC2 back together after being cut off and the front end munched. I have two new corner lights, one new head light assembly, a new hood, new passenger side fender and new nose cone.

My question is I am re painting the rest of the car along with the new pieces. is there any precautions I need to take when preping the old body pieces? I have never refinished Plastic panels before. Any suggestions or helpful tips would be appreciated.

Thanks
Diverdown

Yeah I figured to start around an 800 and go from there, is there any reaction between factory paint and non factory paint ? I'm looking at going back to the same colour, ( Black gold I think it was called)

A decent paint shop would squirt it with a suitable primer so that the fresh paint will bond to the original finish.

When sanding down the old finish, a few drops of dish detergent in the water you're using helps a lot.

Final sanding of the old finish before laying on the primer should be made with no higher than 400 grit paper. The same thing goes for laying down the colour coat on top of the primer.

If you get sand happy and dig down to plastic, you'd be best to prime those areas with a special primer. A bodyshop supply store will be able to point you towards the right product.

Don't forget that the flexible front and rear bumpers need to have flex agent added to the paint.

Nothing else obvious is coming to mind at the moment.

They sell chemical strippers that will strip either to the primer or to the plastic. They're advertised for bumpers, but a Saturn's verticle panels are made out of the same material.

It's a whole lot quicker and easier than doing it by hand or machine.
