Default problems with tranny

I hear ppl talk about tranny problem with saturns. I have had my saturn less than a year so im still learning about the car, my car shakes a bit when the clutch is in and its in gear.....not all the time but sometimes. This I know is either my throw out bearing or the clutch itself....no biggie its getting replaced anyhow with an aftermarket one

the problems that you all have with trannies.....are these mostly on Autos or both?

The most common tranny problem discussed is throwing the differential pin, which applies to both auto and manual. The pin doesn't hold up well to sudden jolts, such as spinning tires that suddenly make traction (doing burnouts, spinning tires on ice and suddenly finding dry pavement, etc). Throwing the pin pretty much ends the tranny - could grind the internals, could punch a hole in the housing.

I'm not familiar with any other terribly common saturn tranny problems. Mine works fine so far.

I dont do burnouts cuz thats just retarded in any FWD car and I live in the southwest so snow is not usually a problem. Can the diff pin be upgraded before it happens just as preventive maint.?

Yeah, welding the diff pin is about the only thing. There used to also be what was called a "diff pin saver" (I'm still unclear as to what it did, because people still recommended the welding along with it), but it's apparently been dropped recently due to lack of demand.

You'll probably be fine, but if you happen to have a chance to weld it or get it welded sometime, it's not a bad idea.

I'm not intimately familiar with the tranny's, but you may be able to find something by doing a search.

The diff pin holds the differential in place. I dont know the specifics of how it works, but I know enough to tell you that welding it requires removal of the tranny from the car, and disassembly of the tranny case to get to the internals where the pin is. Removal of the tranny requires removing the axles.

If you don't like taking apart transmissions, I would suggest what I am doing. I'm driving with what I have now not really caring if it breaks or not. I bought a nice MP3 trans for 100 bucks and I'm having someone experienced weld it up for me. Then if I ever throw my pin or next time my engine comes back out, I'm going to swap the transmissions as well.
