Default What to do with this 172k car

'White heat' is the nickname my girlfriend named my 93' sl2. I've only put about 12k of the 172k that it has on the clicker. The body is perfect, new brakes/rotors, battery, radiator, all the power works, a/c causes the car to get hot, but other then that I love it. Recently the headgasket started leaking, antifreeze began disappearing rather quickly. And the stock clutch starting to go south I believe, it's not slipping, just not shifting as good as it used to.

Should I spend the money to keep this car on the road when I only have 1500 invested in it. I've been told that these motors don't last much longer no matter how I drive it, which is like a old lady. I've thought about getting a overhaul kit and a clutch and see if I can't get it to go on towards the 300k mile club. Does anyone know where I can find one or where I may look for different options?

well, saturns can run foreever, but it is maily determaned by the amount of care they recieved early in it's life, something that you really have no control over. take my wagon for example. '94 twin, automatic. 205K. sure i abused the thing by racing at and whatnot, but it it got it's oil changes, brake service, coolant flushes and all that. and thats why it lasted as long as it did.

if it were me, i'd put the money into it. i am in the (long) process of replacing the whole drivetrain in my car, rather than buy another (which would cost the same.)

i like my car. as you must like yours. if you put the money into it. you'll get it back.

however at 170K i wouldn't just change the clutch and the head gasket. i'd give it at least a minor refurbishing.

pull the engine, clean it up, replace the clutch, alternator timing chain water pump starter, ps pump ect.

if it were me i'd go one step further and strip it down, check and replace the bearings and piston rings. put it back together with new belts hoses and fluids, run it on synthetic and shoot for the 400K club.

good luck guy...

Yeah, I agree, you have a good motor there, if it was a SOHC I may have a different answer for you, but you have the twin.

Also about pulling the motor and doing a overhaul, that is a good idea too, but can you afford the downtime of rebuilding the car? Also if you are going to pull the engine, might as well throw in a couple bolt on parts for more power, and a aftermarket clutch
