Default Clutch replacement problem

I just replaced the clutch on my 2002 Vue. However, when I tried to depress the pedal, there was so much resistance that the plastic part of the pedal rod broke. Does anyone know what might have caused this resistance and where I should look to correct it... the replacement part is too expensive to keep breaking the pedal rod.
