Default maryland emission test

Hello everybody,

I just want to know what kind of test they did during the emission inspection. I have a 96 SL2 and the "service engine soon" light is on everytime it's a rainy day, do you know if they plug a computer to the car in order to check the SES codes or they just watch the dashboard to see if the light is on or not?

Thanks for your help,

Seb

they will plug it in and check. and you will fail. you could undo your battery for like 15mins and then take it there the next day (assuming no lights come on in the meantime). but seein as its only when the airs damp i would get a squirt bottle open hood start and squirt the plug wires down and look for where it sparks at. if it arcs at the wires they are bad if its by the coil then the coils and wires should be replaced. taking the off and cleaning the terminals helps out too. of course im assuming that the ses light opn rainy days is from a misfire when the wires get damp and arc. very popular problem. good luck

Thanks Plasticar,

I will check the plug wires. I actually had another problem that causes misfires. My valve cover gasket was bad and I had some oil in my plug hole #1. I changed the gasket this week end and so far so good, I don't see any leak. So this was a misfire cause but damp air is another one I think. I will check plug wires and coil. For now I don't have any SES light on.

I assume you already pass the MD emission test, what do they check ?
I will be happy to look at these controled items before going to the test and perhaps fail! My car has 130k miles so I'm pretty anxious.

Thanks Plasticar, bye

dont try to reset the ecu...If it has just been reset, their scanner wont work and they will tell you to come back... then you WILL fail.Just take it to a shop and get it checked out man
