Aftermarket Short Shifters: Ion shifter in S-Series..?

Would an Ion short shifter or any other short shifter be able to fit in an S-Series? (just the shaft..)

I realize that the shifter is made specifically for the Ion and marketed with that label for a reason, but what's the big difference between those and what size the S-Series shifter is?

Are shifter shafts really that vehicle specific?
