Skunk Problem

I've gone a long time between hitting anything with my car, but last night it happened:I hit a skunk. I thought I was going to die on the ride home it smelled so bad. Getting out wasn't much better. So now I have to start working on how to get rid of the smell. Any suggestions on products?

I don't know of any products in particular, only of the old wives tale thing. They say that tomato juice is the best thing for removing it. So I would suggest that anywhere external, anywhere that won't be hurt by tomato juice you give it a wash down with that.

Otherwise, internal stuff or fabrics I really have no idea. I am so sorry, I would hate to face this.

Wow. That takes me back. I grew up in Ohio where skunks were around enough to hit every now and then. Since I have lived in Chicago, I haven't run across any (no pun intended.) I never directly hit a skunk but have driven over recently killed bodies and absorbed the funk. Actually, the smell does not last long. It will eventually go away within a day or two or at least that has been my experience.

You have to kill the bacteria that is causing that smell. I would try using the Lotus sanitizer. It uses Oxygen molecules in water to clean anything and get rid of odors.

I actually hit it smack in the middle of the bumper and license plate. So its all on the outside and onto the hood/windshield. Never heard of Lotus sanitizer, but I can get out the lysol for sure. It snowed today but this weekend should be nice and clear so I'm heading over to the U-wash to clean her up.

Won't a good dousing of Clorox bleach do the same thing? That type of bacteria needs a host to continue to survive so it would not be around long. You would, though, want to get rid of the gunk in the best way. Any strong (and anti-bacterial if you deem necessary) cleanser or a sanitizing car wash would do the job, I would think. Then, I would be remiss if I didn't ask you to remember what you were thinking about when you hit the skunk. There are some circles of thought that say when we kill an animal, that animal has come along to clean from us something that is needing to be removed (worries about the past, fears of the future - that type of thing.)

I think that if you used Clorox on the VUE, it would harm the paint.
