It's probably a mostly severed wire that re-closes (the two sides of the cut wire pivoting to touch each other) when you pull on it. Bend it the other way and you lose electrical contact.

Now that you know where the problem lies, why not just fix it?
If you can't solder, strip the wire ends, hold them up in the air parallel, twist them around each other, put on a weatherproof wire nut (home depot/lowe's), some electrical tape for good measure....done,
