Default How-to: LED-Bulb Replacement- 2nd Gen clusters/Upper brake light

Description

The following is a in depth how-to for the changing of the stock cluster bulbs with LED's on a 2nd gen cluster (including '95). This also will work for the Upper brake light.

Tools Needed:

Materials Needed

You need this type of bulb. Any thing else will give you spots on the cluster.

This is what it looks like

For the Upper tail light you need 6 LEDs. For the Cluster you need 5 LEDs

Time: 20 minutes

Procedure
1a. Remove the cluster. Richpin has a video to do this.
1b. remove the Upper tail light cover. Richpin also has a video to do this.

2. Take the bulb and bend the leads from this:

To this:

3. Set the bulb inside the vice grips. Notice that the vice grip is over the edge so the bulb base lays flat.

4. Using the small screw driver, place it inside the hold on the bottom of the bulb base as seen above. Place a paper towel or cloth under the bulb. Then tap the screwdriver with a hammer. The bulb should pop right out. It does sometimes break into pieces so be careful.

5. Now take the LED and bend the leads as so:

6. Take the bulb base and press the metal contact points up with the screw driver.

7. Then take the LED and put it into the socket. The leads need to go through the socket so it looked like the second picture in Step 2. Its tricky. I found that getting them in one at a time worked well. This is the hardest part, but is made easier by Step 6.

8. Bend the leads up so the touch the contacts on the base.

9. Repeat for the other bulbs.

10. Install everything, reversing the steps taken to remove the bulbs.

The final product looks like this:

Default Also, this works for an ION taillight

I did this to the 3rd brake light on my ION, however, I bought red "Jamstrait" 194 LED bulbs from Autozone. Those LED bulbs are slso in some Advance Auto stores.

It works very well. Every bit as bright as the factory bulbs, but with a faster response time.

Unfortunately, the gauge cluster takes something other than a 194 bulb.
