Default Astra euro engine or 6 speed

So newbie here. Ran a few searches and no hits. Wanting to change the engine or maybe throw in a 6 speed for an Astra to get better highway mpg basically. I'd like higher torque but those 2 things generally oppose each other.

Obviously a turbo 'could' be bolted on but a) not a preferable solution and b) would kill mpg afaik. Hadn't thought of chipping it until I noticed the sticky.

Any thoughts on how I could improve both mpg and torque? Even using an engine from another manufacturer w/would fit?

Thanks,

Mac

a small turbo would be beneficial to fuel efficiency and torque. Why do you think most cars are being manufactured with one these days.
