Default Stretched Timing Chains in 3.6 V6

We have just been advised that our timing chains are the reason that the check engine light remains on after replacing both crank and cam shaft sensors. I've used synthetic oil in the car for the past 3 years and chain reg at 3000 miles. Does anyone know if the replacement chains and tensors are different than what supplied from the factory? Very costly repair but found someone who can do this somewhat less than dealership. Does anyone know anything about this and what can be done to eliviate this happening again with such low mileage. I thought timing chains lasted longer than belts.
