Default Saturn vue engine

Our 2004 Saturn vue begun shaking and choking and Firestone said we need to replace the whole engine. The cheapest one we found is $3000, it is out of our price range. Is there any place to find reliable engines and know we are not screwed over? There are no codes, even tough the engine light is on. My husband loves this car and it has a little less than 100k on it. It has always had problems with oxygen sensors being fried, and I think there is something faulty with this models and year design too, but few days ago it just begun to convulse while driving.
