Default '94 SL1 head swap

As I start prepping for a DOHC motor build from the ground up, I want to look into putting the best DOHC head that I possibly can on the current SOHC lower end. If anyone has any tips/information on this job I would really appreciate it. I'm wanting to know which year head should I use, what all will i need to convert/ swap out for my car to accept such a swap out without electrical/sensory issues so any bit of information you may have on the topic would be greatly accepted. Thanks in advance people's.

Like I said, I don't know to much on the S cars.

I believe the 92s head, but as far as it bolting up to a SOHC bottom end, that I am not sure.

sc2sick could probably help you with that one.

I figured someone on here should know something on the subject. I know about my car and it's current setup I just know nothing about what all I can convert over to the twin head as far as the year models and such.

Sc2sick would be the best person for that.
Derf might know, but I don't know where he has been.

I know a 2.4 head can bolt up to a 2.2 though.
Or a 2.0 can bolt up to a 2.4.
That is for Ions though. haha

Lol wouldn't mind having an ion to work on/start a turbo build with. Definitely want to try and start on this head swap sooner or later though. I've wanted to do this head swap for quite some time now.

You're in a tough position because the 94 is TBI.. you'll need to swap the engine harness from a MPFI vehicle from 93-94 DOHC. Your post doesn't specify a transmission.. if you're automatic you're basically SOL unless you swap to manual because the PCM will get confused.

I think you're looking for this

http://www.saturnspot.com/showthread.php?t=186606

collected info from many owners over many years from many sites.

Read the section on pistons and valves in the middle of the doc, as well as the valve part towards the top. There are many possible combos. One of the questions is it worth it for the small gain? If you're doing it for fun, I would say not; I don't believe you'll see that much of an increase unless and until you turbo it.

Mr. Sick is indeed correct that you'll also be switching from throttle body injection to Multiport Fuel Injection, which means finding a throttle body, fuel rail, injectors. Not sure about a return to the fuel system in the back.

The engine wiring harness does indeed need to be changed to the DOHC version. 93-94 PCMs are grouped together so your choices are ---93 or 94.

One of the most evil details hiding in these swaps are the transmission aspects. The SOHCs had different trannys than the DOHCs. Different manuals, different automatics.

SOHCs need to see SOHC transmissions. DOHCs need to see DOHC transmissions. (see swap guide) If not, SES light goes on, you will never pass inspection, and on top of that, without changing to a DOHC tranny you're missing out on most of the fun. It's geared lower at first and is a hell of a lot more fun to drive.

SO think carefully before you dive in because there's a lot more to it than choosing the right head.....
