Default Just a kid with a Dream

What's up guys? I'm new to the Saturn world, recently purchased a '92 Saturn SL2, don't get me wrong, I love the car, but lately, it's grinding my gears. (No pun intended). Just on this page looking for help and looking to help.

May be wondering why I put "Just a kid with a Dream" as my subject? Well you see, I bought the 1992 Saturn SL2 for quite a few reasons. When I look at a car, I see what the car could be, not what it is. When I first seen this lil' blue Sl2, I thought of a pretty nice little street car. One day, I'll have this bad boy running and sounding the way I want it too. As of now, It's sitting with a crooked tire, (just replaced Stabilizer bar, and driver side inner tie rod and tie rod end, and the wheels still crooked.. :\ My friend said he was gonna put a nice stereo in there for me, and now the car won't start, windshield wipers won't work, and half the fuses I have under the hood aren't getting power (they aren't blown) same thing on the inside of the car (they aren't blown either). I don't know what he did to my car, but I want it running again. :l I miss my lil' blue Sl2. Any help would be great, and I'll help any way I can. Thanks guys.

Thanks for joining Tyler!
You sound just like I did when I first started using the Saturn forums entering this world.
There is soooo much to learn here.
It all comes with time and being patient.

You can post some pictures of that beauty! I just recently sold my 92 SL1, and they are quite nice.

Hey Tyler,

Can you do me a favor and set up a signature similar to mine below please?
Go into the User CP at the top, and the left side it says "edit signature"

Just need your name and car type for future help. You can add your other vehicles and location as well if you would like.

Thank you,
Billy

sounds like a tech forum post to me....

0) used to own a 92 SL2.
1) No BCM, Passlock, chip keys, RKE, etc. Straightforward and simple
2) To unscrew whatever is screwed requires me knowing exactly which wires (color) coming from where (steering column base?) were tapped into for the stereo. Does the stereo work?
3)Have you checked your battery voltage? should be a hare under 12V. Please respond with the V.
4) Have you checked your pos AND neg battery cables for corrosion (cut back the insulation a bit and look for signs of acid damage) and tightness to the battery, frame (batt -), and starter (batt +)?
5) Does the car crank but not fire up or does it not crank at all?
6)Fuse checks: need to pull and test individually. Most are probably orig to the car, and there may be corrosion in the sockets. After verifying a fuse, insert and remove it 2 or 3 times to "sweep" the terminals and remove the corrosion from the circuit.
7) Based on where he was working (physically) to install the radio, it is possible that the Instrument Panel Junction Box (IPJB) got jarred, and there may be a corroded hot connection to the back of that panel that needs to be cleaned up. I've never removed one so I can't help you there -just make sure you DISCONNECT THE BATTERY first
I have had many independent mechanics tell me that the underhood junction box (UHJB) is prone to issues with burned contacts underneath, leading to open circuits.

So you see it could be a multitude of things

But what are the most simple explanations?
a)bad contact at battery, frame, ground
b)bad battery/cables
c)blown fuses as result of doing the install w the battery still in the circuit (and accidental shorting of wires)
d) fuses making poor or no contact

If he had no wiring diagram for the Saturn, how'd he.....? Industry standards aren't always

check a) thru d). Some of the fuses are in series with others depending on what branch of the circuit they are on. My gut feel is IGN1 and/or IGN2 are blown. Might be a 3 -- too lazy to go get my wiring diagram. Check those first. If they are blown, go buy a bunch of spares of the same amperage for testing.

If we can get it to start and run w the new radio---cool
If we cannot, have him put things back the way they were. Tell him you don't like the equalizer on it---not sensitive enough

Make sure any wire disconnected from the new radio gets reconnected to where it had been prior to install.

Please report back w findings.
I'm tired.
Goodnight
