Default Serious noob here

Me, in a nutshell, when considering my knowledge about this stuff.

I've always liked the idea, just never been in a position to get into it.
And now, I am finally getting to the point of being able to do it.

So, from what I have been able to read here and a couple of other places... It seems that folks suggest to start with the intake and exhaust.

I would like to go for a mix of autocross and drag

The old gal is my daily driver. And if I spend TOO much, my human gal might suffocate me in my sleep. (Obvious joke, but, she won't be too happy. lol)

I was thinking of going straight pipe, maybe? I don't want it to sound too ricey when I am just driving around. But maybe kick out some sound when I stomp on it in low gears. Or, just in general to sound like it has got some power. I like the sound of a strong engine growl. Or at least as much of a growl as one can get out of a 4-cyl engine. (I used to drive an 88 Chevy Scottsdale with pipes and boy did she growl!)

TL;DR version: Upgrades. I would like suggestions on what products I should look into with regards to price vs. performance.

Ready? Aaaaand... GO!

I hate to rain on the parade, but a mix between autocross, drag, and street legal driving is not a realistic line to take. Certain things done for a gain in autocross are contraindicated for drag racing and would likely herniate a disk in your back driving down the street.

I think you need to strongly re-evaluate the end goal of all of this before you embark on a path....to..........

Straight up, I want to increase power and speed. But I want to still be able to drive it to and from work. So, I suppose drag would be closer to my goal after thinking about it.

power increase: Turbo. Not much to be gained (10 HP maybe) on these cars with the whole TRUE CAI ported polished intake bigger exhaust. I'm not saying don't do it -- i'm saying don't get your hopes up too high. There are NO CHIPS for the S cars. 100% of everything you see is a scam. Look up Turbinator.

Grand rapids does not have smog tests (I think) so the big bore throttle body, etxtra injector to feed turbo, custom ex mani and a whole lotta effort will get you there but the parts to do it are prob becoming scarce.

Speed is electronically governor limited and that's that.

I know I am biased with saying boost everything, but seriously, the only way to add power to an S car is boost.

If it is your daily, you may just want to keep it basic to exhaust, wheels, stance, and work on piecing together a turbo kit so you can do it in a weekend.

I think I will start small after the rebuild, and go with the upgrades to intake, and exhaust to start.

If I'm not able to get a lot of power from the engine, maybe I should look for quicker acceleration? I know, I know... It's just a Saturn. But, as the title of this thread states "Serious noob here" so I'm learning here.

I would wait on the intake and exhaust to figure out what you want to do for sure.

The intake and exhaust for a turbo set up will be different than a n/a car.

Do a built motor, and work on piecing the turbo set up together. Or you could probably just get away with a ported throttle body, CAI, and exhaust to wake her up a bit.

I do want to go for a turbo. But, you know, noob. Haha

I have so many questions, and I don't know where to start lol

I suppose the first question, is what can I get away with when rebuilding my engine to allow for the installation of a turbo at a later time?

Should I hold off on the install until I have all of the pieces of the puzzle? Or can I install them over time as I generate the needed funds? (After typing that I feel a strong sense of holding off to install all at once is likely the wisest course.)

If I can install over time, where should I start? (And do you have a preferred shop at a local retailer, or shop online? If online, could you provide a link, please?)
