Default 97 saturn sc1 - error code?

I have a sc1 that repeatedly died after 5 minutes of running. I never got an error code in the computer. Turns out it was the crankshaft position sensor. My question is why did it never generate an error code? Saturn has always had a very straight forward approach to their cars/engines/computers, how could they have missed such a simple yet incredibly important engine control sensor? Just asking, -WB.

Crank sensor will not normally set a code. If the PCM does not see a signal from the sensor it assumes that the crank is not rotating. No rotation no signal produced so no spark.

Very interesting, however, I still did have spark (please refer to my thread under "s series" titled "97 sc1 stalls out"). I'm not sure if it was a correctly timed spark, but spark nonetheless. Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to disrespect the saturn car company. On the contrary, I have 2 saturn sc's and I am a huge proponent of all their cars to both my friends and family. Also, I do respect and value your insight and I thank you for the reply. I'm just trying to wrap my head around what is going on with my car. Thanks, -WB.

The crank sensors tend to fail more when hot/warm. This would explain your 5 minute run time before the car died.
