I'm getting my moms 1999 Saturn SL1, and i was wondering what would be the best (and most affordiable) option to make this car a ground pounding monster?

Do you mean make it a race car , or make into a car with a great sounding sound system?

An amp and subs make the biggest bang for the buck change. After that you will need to upgrade the head unit with an aftermarket unit with aux. inputs. The factory speakers which are probably already fuzzy will have to be repaced also. Otherwise you can just listen to the news and invest your money in your education (a wiser investment that wont depreciate).

Education's already taken care of. So I'm using my extra money (hopefully less that $300) to put a system in my car.

If you are going to buy a new system you are going to be cutting it pretty tight. You might get a better deal on used components (although I would be kind of wary about used sound system components unless you can try them out first). Check prices of various components on Ebay to get an approximate idea about the cost.

You could build a WalMart special that would be a little better than the stock radio in your car.

For $300 that's what Walmart will get you. You're not going to build a "Ground Pounding Monster" for $300.
